Distal pancreatectomy is a surgical technique that has been
used in the treatment of benign and malignant masses and lesions since 1884, when
the first body and tail resection was performed. The process that evolved from laparotomy
to laparoscopy and then to robotic surgery continues today.
Spleen-preserving procedures should always be preferred in appropriate cases.
Despite all the developments, it is a technique that still carries
complications, especially postoperative pancreatic fistula.
