Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is a common
medical condition that results in significant morbidity, mortality, and
healthcare costs. It typically presents with hematemesis (vomiting of blood or
coffee-ground-like material) and/or melena (black-colored stools). Hematochezia
may occur in approximately 5 to 10 percent of severe UGIB cases. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding encompasses bleeding
into the lumen from any location between the upper part of the esophagus and
the ligament of Treitz. During pregnancy, some health issues may arise, and
one of these problems is upper gastrointestinal bleeding. In this section, we
will discuss the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for upper
gastrointestinal bleeding during pregnancy.
