The first officially recorded attempts of blood transfusion,
one of the most common medical procedures performed today, started about 350 years ago. The
first successful human-to-human blood transfusion was performed by James
Blundell in 1818. A new process started with the discovery of blood groups by
Karl Landsteiner in 1901. The solutions produced for the storage of blood
enabled the establishment of the first blood bank in London in 1921. The first
blood transfusion in our country was performed at Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty in
1938. In 1957, Kızılay Blood Centres were opened in Istanbul and Ankara. As a
result, blood transfusions have taken their current modern and systematic form
with the historical development, discoveries and advancement of technology.
