Valeriana L. is a group of perennial plants belonging
to the Caprifoliaceae family. The most widely used genus of the Valeriana
family in Europe and the USA is Valeriana officinalis (valerian) (cat’s love)
Valerian has an unique smell. Traditionally it has been used since the time of
Hippocrates. Valeriana officinalis produces its sedative effects through GABA
and also contains different types of iridoids. Valeriana officinalis is mostly
used for sleep disorders due to its sedative effect. It is used in many clicial
situations due to the different active ingredients in its structure. There are
a limited number of studies regarding about cancer treatment. Mostly in vitro
studies examining the metabolites obtained from valeriana have positive effects
on cancer.
