The spleen is one of the largest lymphoid organs in the
body. With recent studies on the haematopoietic and immunological functions of the spleen,
there is a greater understanding of the importance of the spleen to life. Since its introduction in
1991, laparoscopic splenectomy has grown in popularity and become the gold standard technique. As in all
fields, it will continue to evolve with new technologies and scientific facts and will become more
widely used throughout the world.
