As the proportion of the elderly population increases
worldwide, the rate of interventional procedures is also increasing. In
endoscopic procedures, sedation is applied outside the operating room with the
direct participation of anesthesiologists or by a trained nurse under the
supervision of the endoscopist. Pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic changes
that occur with aging affect the metabolism of drugs used in sedation.
Therefore, the dose of drugs should be titrated lower than in young adults. In this article, gastrointestinal endoscopy performed under
sedation, physiological changes that develop with aging, drugs used in sedation
and their adverse effects are reviewed in the light of current guidelines and
studies.
