The proportion of the elderly population is
increasing all over the world, forming a large population, and therefore the
number of endoscopic procedures for this age group is increasing day by day.
The risks arising from endoscopic procedures increase in this age group due to
factors such as the increase in chronic diseases with advancing age, some
physiological changes and sedative drugs used during endoscopic procedures or
interactions with the drugs the patient is using. Although endoscopy is generally
well tolerated in the elderly, the patient group is heterogeneous. Therefore,
interventions for the elderly should be evaluated individually for each
patient. The physician must be understanding of the wishes of patients and
their families and recognize when examination and treatment are inappropriate.
