Diverticula are suc-like outward protrusions that can
be seen anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract usually developing from the
weak points of the lumen. They are most often encountered in the colon. The
prevalence of colonic diverticula increases with age, therefore colonic
diverticula and related diseases are frequently encountered in the geriatric
population. Some patients with colonic diverticula may develop complications
such as acute diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding. The prevalence of diverticular
disease of the colon is increasing globally and it has become an important
health issue all over the world. In this section, the pathophysiology, risk
factors, diagnosis, and treatment of colonic diverticula and
diverticula-related clinical conditions and complications will be summarized.
