In recent years, ERCP has been widely performed in
the treatment of mechanical obstruction in the biliary and pancreatic ducts.
Thanks to advances in health care, average life expectancy has increased and
the elderly population has increased. Therefore, the number of elderly patients
in need of ERCP is increasing day by day. ERCP is a minimally invasive method compared to the
surgical procedure. However, it can lead to serious complications. The risk of
developing complications has increased relatively in elderly patients,
especially due to additional diseases and the fragility of old age. In
particular, anesthesia-related complications are more common. In studies, side
effects related to the ERCP procedure in the elderly were found to be similar
to other patients. In general, ERCP can be performed safely in elderly
patients. However, the health status of these patients and their need for ERCP
should be carefully evaluated. Procedure time and total dose of anesthetic
drugs should be kept low.
