Dyspepsia is a set of symptoms that are common in
society and include pain and/or burning in the epigastric region, postprandial
bloating and early satiety. Dyspepsia is examined under the headings of organic
and functional dyspepsia. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is recommended as
the first step in the approach to dyspepsia in geriatric patients. Functional
dyspepsia should be considered in patients where no organic cause is found in
routine examinations including endoscopy, Helicobacter pylori is negative, or
symptoms persist despite eradication. Functional dyspepsia is a chronic
disorder that is difficult to treat and progresses with exacerbations and
remissions. Limitations such as multiple drug use, interactions and side
effects of drugs, and difficulty in compliance with treatment make the
treatment of functional dyspepsia in the elderly population even more
difficult.
