The rate of the geriatric population is gradually increasing
in Turkey and around the world as access to health services becomes more
widespread. With increasing age, there are some changes in the esophagus and
due to these changes, gastroesophageal reflux may occur more easily. It has
been reported that typical symptom identification rates in geriatric patient
admissions are lower than in younger patients. However, it was stated that
admission with alarm symptoms such as weight loss and anemia was significantly
increased in the elderly patient group compared to the normal patient group.
Therefore, early invasive evaluation should be considered in the geriatric age
group. Lifestyle changes, medical treatments and, if necessary, surgical
treatments can be used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease in
the geriatric population, as in young patients.
