Functional urology focuses on diseases related to the dysfunction of the lower urinary tract (LUT), which includes the bladder, urethra, and pelvic floor structures. The physiology of the lower urinary system is quite complex in humans compared to other species, making it challenging to create an ideal animal model for understanding LUT dysfunction. Although it may not directly correspond to human evaluation in assessing LUT function in animal models, numerous defined invasive and non-invasive methods are available. Overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, and bladder outlet obstruction models constitute the most used models in functional urology.
