Obesity represents a major health
challenge in the modern era. Bariatric surgical procedures not only treat
obesity but also offer significant benefits in resolving related metabolic
issues. Due to numerous challenges and reasons, studying the effects of
bariatric surgery and the resulting metabolic changes with human subjects is
often impractical. Both the diversity of patient populations and the variety of
surgical procedures affect research outcomes. Experimental animal models
provide valuable opportunities to investigate metabolic, hormonal, and
inflammatory changes resulting from reduced food intake capacity and absorption
caused by bariatric procedures. This section briefly addresses obesity models
and aims to explain the technical aspects of experimental bariatric procedures.
