Migration is a phenomenon that
negatively affects physical and mental health. Migrants experience intense
distress in all periods of displacement: pre-migration, migration journey and
post-migration. Social determinants of migrant health are education, income,
housing and nutrition. It is a fundamental human right for migrants to have
access to health services at the same level as other people. However, due to
housing conditions and lack of hygiene, inadequate and irregular nutrition,
chronic diseases, infectious diseases, reproductive system problems,
nutritional disorders and psychological problems are prominent health problems
among migrants. Due to health inequalities, language problems, exclusion by
locals and health personnel, racism, legal, cultural and economic barriers,
both morbidity and mortality rates can be high among migrants. Infant and
maternal mortality is increasing due to lack of pregnancy and vaccination follow-up,
and births in poor conditions. Problems in access to health facilities and
medicines make it difficult to diagnose and treat diseases such as cancer
early. In Turkey, one of the countries with the largest migrant population in
the world, there are migrants with different statuses. Access to health
services, medicines and materials that will enable this disadvantaged group,
which has become vulnerable, to regain their health should be ensured. On the
other hand, considering migration as a public health security threat,
preventive strategies should be developed by administrators to reduce the high
risk. The number of primary health care facilities and mental health centers
should be increased in regions with migrant populations. Protective policies should
be developed for women and children who are most affected by the migration
process. Finally, in order to ensure the sustainability of public health and
the country's economy, projects should be developed in cooperation with
international organizations to address problems such as language, cultural
differences, nutrition and lack of health personel.
