Smoking and tobacco use are among the leading preventable
causes of death. Considering that the probability of developing cardiovascular diseases is more
than twice in smokers as compared to non- smokers, the single most crucial factor that can be modified
to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases is smoking cessation. Pharmacotherapies used for
smoking cessation include varenicline, bupropion and nicotine replacement therapy. There is
sufficient evidence from studies conducted to show that the benefits of using these treatment methods
outweigh the low risk of serious cardiovascular events associated with their administration
and the probability of developing cardiovascular problems from continued smoking.
