Tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) intoxication is a life-threatening and time-sensitive condition that occurs with overdose of this drug group. Expanded new indications, such as treatment of chronic pain, have once again brought TCAs into immediate medical attention. The mortality rate approaches 70% in patients who attempt suicide by swallowing TCAs and cannot reach a healthcare facility. When life threatening effects develop, patients require prompt diagnosis and aggressive treatment. Although there are many case reports in the literature, these overdoses are extremely difficult to detect due to their various clinical presentations. This article discusses the clinical features and treatment of TCA intoxication.
