Psychiatric conditions such as depressive disorders, anxiety
disorders, PTSD, postoperative cognitive dysfunction, silent brain
infarctions or delirium can occur in the perioperative period of cardiovascular surgeries. Although
evidence levels are low, some psychological interventions are recommended for cardiac
surgery patients. These include preoperative psychoeducation, psychosocial support,
optimizing beliefs and expectations, cognitive-behavioral interventions, hypnosis and
hypnotherapy, relaxation exercises, interventions to prevent postoperative delirium, recognizing
comorbid psychiatric disorders, . systematized psychotherapy interventions and pharmacological
treatments. Preparing patients for cardiovascular surgery mentally, performing pre- and
post operative mental examinations are important for increasing patients’ compliance and reducing
the risk of postoperative complications.
