Teachers’ Opinions On The Use Of Games In Mathematics Education: A Case Study

This study aims to reveal the opinions and thoughts of primary school and mathematics teachers about the use of games in mathematics education. It was conducted in the case study design of qualitative approach. The participants consisted of 50 teachers, 28 primary school and 22 mathematics teachers, working in public and private schools and at different educational levels. The data were collected online over a period of four months using a semi-structured opinion form. The obtained data were analyzed by content analysis. The results of study show that primary school and mathematics teachers have positive opinions on the use of games in mathematics education. Teachers' positive opinions were supported by their statements about the purposes they realized by using games in mathematics courses and the benefits of games in student and classroom environments. In addition, teachers emphasized the use of instructional games more in mathematics courses; other game types were less preferred than instructional games. Teachers' choice of game types is influenced by their aim to achieve instructional goals.
