Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) with increasing incidence is primarily responsible for maternal mortality and since it is preventable, the whole obstetrician should comprehend and manage this clinical entity competently. All pregnant women should be evaluated in the prenatal period, at the admission to labor, in the intrapartum and postpartum period, and managed according to low, medium, and high-risk groups. Active management of the third stage of labor and the use of prophylactic uterotonics play an important role in the prevention of PPH. The basic principle of PPH is early diagnosis and early intervention.
