Distraction osteogenesis, a method used in oral and maxillofacial surgery, is a process of new bone formation by applying a stretching force to the space between two separated bone segments. This method has been successfully used in the correction of craniofacial deformities. Common indications for distraction osteogenesis in the mandible include mandibular hypoplasias caused by congenital deformities, mandibular asymmetry, and temporomandibular joint ankylosis. Other indications include obstructive sleep apnea, maxillary and mandibular stenosis, mid-facial developmental retardation, cleft lip slits, and bone loss due to pathology. Distraction osteogenesis offers advantages over traditional surgical procedures, such as shorter hospital stays and reduced risk of infection and relapse. It is a valuable treatment option for patients with craniofacial deformities, especially in cases where multiple procedures need to be postponed until the child grows.(AI)
