The liver is the body’s largest internal organ and it undertakes many vital functions as the center of metabolic functions. This organ plays a role in many critical processes, from protein synthesis to detoxification, from energy storage to the production of digestive enzymes. However, these versatile functions of the liver also make it vulnerable to various infections. Most of the blood coming to the liver comes from the gastrointestinal tract via the portal vein, and this blood can also carry potentially pathogenic microorganisms. This situation paves the way for the liver to become infected with many microbial organisms. Bacterial, parasitic and fungal infections can cause serious pathological changes in the liver. These infections may begin directly in the liver or may occur as part of systemic or infectious diseases. The clinical course of liver infections varies greatly depending on the etiology of the infection, the immune status of the host, and the extent of spread of the infection. The aim of this chapter is to discuss the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical symptoms, diagnostic methods and treatment approaches of bacterial liver diseases in detail.
