Kefir is a unique fermentation product of yeast and
bacteria that contains beneficial probiotics. It has been observed that kefir
grains from different parts of the world have different benefits. Unbalanced
microbial structure is defined as dysbiosis. Many studies have been conducted
on dysbiosis in the last decade. Considering that dysbiosis can be overcome
with probiotic consumption, the importance of kefir and other probiotics was
emphasized in the study subjects. Studies have been conducted showing that
kefir has antioxidant, antitumor, apoptotic, antimetastatic, immunomodulatory
and neuroprotective properties. In the results obtained from all these studies,
decreases in Bcl-2, MMP and TGF-α; increases in caspase-3, p53, TGF-β1, Bax:Bcl-2
ratio, Bax, and p21; It is thought that it creates these anti-cancer effects by
regulating Treg cells, which are anti-inflammatory cells. Many probiotics are
sold as dietary supplements that do not require United States Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) approval before marketing. Kefir is not FDA approved as a
cancer drug or cancer preventive drug. It should not be forgotten that
treatment or supportive treatment is not included in current oncology
guidelines.
