It has been shown that cannabis can be associated
with cancer and inflammation through the cannabinoids it produces, and can also
be used in the treatment of a number of cancer-related symptoms such as pain,
anorexia, cachexia, nausea, vomiting, depression and anxiety. Endocannabinoids,
cannabinoid active metabolites and receptors have been shown in macrophages,
lymphocytes, dendritic cells, monocytes and basophils, suggesting that
cannabinoids have a regulatory role on the inflammatory system and are
associated with cell proliferation, apoptosis and cell migration through
regulation of the inflammatory process. Later studies have shown that cannabis
is associated with glioblastoma multiforme, colon, breast, lung, prostate and
pancreatic cancer. In addition, cannabinoids have been shown to be involved in
pain modulation through specific CB1 and CB2 receptors as well as G
protein-coupled receptor 55 (GPCR55), opioid and seretonin receptors.
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, anxiety, depression, anorexia and
cachexia have also been found to be associated with common problems in cancer
patients.
