In the context of enteral nutrition, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) has emerged as a method with relatively low complication risks since the 1980s. This technique involves the insertion of a feeding tube directly into the stomach through the abdominal wall, facilitating enteral nutrition in cases where oral intake is inadequate or poses risks due to factors like aspiration or obstruction. In this section of our book, we provide an overview of nutrition in the elderly population, including the challenges associated with aging and dietary requirements. We also address eating disorders and discuss various PEG methods, along with the potential complications that can arise from this procedure. Additionally, we outline the post-insertion follow-up process for enteral tube placement. Overall, this section aims to shed light on the importance of ensuring adequate nutrition for elderly individuals, the utilization of enteral nutrition methods such as PEG, and the necessary measures to manage and monitor the associated aspects of care.
