Anemia is a common health problem in the geriatric
population. Hemoglobin values 13 mg/dl in men and 12 mg/dl in women are cut-off
values for anemia. Patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are mostly
asymptomatic and diagnosis of anemia is made as a result of routine blood
tests. The most common symptoms are weakness and fatigue. As the cause of
anemia; malnutrition, malabsorption, and gastrointestinal losses should be
considered first. Although laboratory tests are used for the diagnosis of
anemia, the gold standard method is bone marrow biopsy. American
Gastroenterological Association (AGA) recommends bidirectional endoscopy over
no endoscopy, in asymptomatic postmenopausal women and men with IDA. Oral and
IV iron preparations are used in the treatment of IDA. The time required for
the treatment of anemia and repletion of iron stores is approximately 3-6
months.
