Lower gastrointestinal haemorrhage represents a
frequently encountered and potentially life-threatening emergent condition
among elderly individuals. While various pathological entities have been
discerned as potential contributors to gastrointestinal haemorrhage within this
population, the preeminent etiologies are diverticular haemorrhage and vascular
ectasia. Given the burgeoning prevalence of gastrointestinal pathologies in
elderly populations, compounded by the presence of comorbidities and concomitant
medication regimens, it is imperative to conduct a comprehensive medical
history and thorough physical examination to ascertain the unique risk factors
and underlying causes in individual cases. Subsequently, the diagnostic and
therapeutic strategy should be tailored to the severity of the haemorrhagic
episode.
