The number of patients diagnosed with chronic liver failure and the associated liver transplantation is increasing in the world. Average life expectancy in humans has increased and the need for liver transplantation has increased in the geriatric population. It has been reported that 23.8% of the liver transplant waiting list in the United States of America (USA) consists of geriatric patients. Until recently, liver transplantation was avoided in elderly patients and transplant results were reported to be poor. However, post-transplant survival rates have increased recently. Many guideline recommendations now state that, in the absence of significant comorbidities, old age is not a contraindication for liver transplantation.
