Life expectancy is increasing due to the
technological developments in medicine. Thus the geriatric population rate is
growing. Organs and systems become more vulnerable to external factors and
pathogens by the changes that occur with aging. The gastrointestinal tract has
a large surface area, dense neuronal and lymphatic network and performs
important metabolic reactions. It is therefore susceptible to diseases with
aging. Along with the luminal organs in the gastrointestinal system, organs
such as the liver and pancreas, which have very important functions in terms of
digestion and metabolism, are also affected by aging and related changes. Most
of the changes that occur with aging are asymptomatic, but symptoms and
diseases may occur related to the changes. In recent years, studies have
revealed the physiological mechanisms underlying these changes that occur with
aging.
