Constipation occurs in approximately 40% of cases
during pregnancy. It may continue for 6-12 weeks in the post-partum period.
Some hormonal changes led by progesterone and increased uterine volume play a
role in the pathophysiology. Medications frequently used during pregnancy such
as antiemetics and iron preparations can cause constipation. The most common
etiological cause is functional constipation, as in the general population.
Lifestyle changes are the first step in treatment. Laxatives are used in refractory
cases. It negatively affects the quality of life of pregnant women.
