Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one
of the most common gastrointestinal system diseases. It is also common during
pregnancy. Although it is a benign condition, it seriously affects the person’s
quality of life. The development of GERD is multifactorial, however hormonal
factors play a prominent role. Heartburn and regurgitation are the most common
symptoms. Diagnosis is typically based on anamnesis. In the presence of
atypical symptoms or if complications are thought to develop, endoscopic methods
may be used for diagnostic purposes. A gradual approach is preferred in
treatment, starting with lifestyle and dietary changes. When there is no
response to conservative approaches; antacids, sucralfate, H2 receptor
antagonists and proton pump inhibitors are gradually used.
