In the historical context between migration and the social work profession, concepts such as diversity and cultural competence brought about by migration have also affected the ethical principles of the profession.  Migration and ethics in social work are complex and ever-changing issues of policy and practice that social workers need to understand in order to better serve their clients. Migration policies often interfere with social work practice as they determine the rights status of migrant populations. In this respect, it is important to consider national and international legislation on migrants when working with migrant groups. The NASW Code of Ethics emphasizes the importance of cultural competence and the provision of culturally informed services that empower marginalized individuals and groups. However, social workers may sometimes encounter many ethical problems while struggling against oppression, racism, discrimination and inequalities. As a result, social workers need to be aware of the legal and social work issues that affect working with migrants, the policies that affect the rights and needs of their clients, and the ethical values that guide their practice. By promoting cultural competence and taking action against oppression, racism, discrimination and inequalities, social workers can better serve migrant groups and improve their well-being.
