Psychiatric Effects Of Drugs Used In Cardiovascular Diseases
The use
of cardiovascular medications can lead to various neuropsychiatric
effects. Numerous cardiovascular drugs are known to cause higher
rates of fatigue and sedation compared to placebo, and there have been reported
cases of medication-induced mood disorders, psychosis, and cognitive
disturbances associated with many of these medications. For example, depression
has been linked to β-blockers in the past and lipid-lowering agents have been
linked to cognitive impairment. However recent data syntheses have
indicated that that association may be weaker than initially thought Although
the psychiatric effects of cardiologic drugs are not generalizable, it is
possible to cause idiocentric psychiatric reactions. Moreover, cardiology drugs
are used therapeutically in many psychiatric disorders such as anxiety
disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and tic disorder.
