The use of synthetic drugs to treat eye diseases in a safe manner is still a work in progress in modern medicine. Herbal extracts and secondary metabolites isolated from herbs can be used in the treatment of these diseases with less side effects, unlike synthetic drugs. Many herbs and secondary metabolites used in ocular diseases world wide have been reported. Many of these naturally occurring compounds and extracts, however, have yet to be adequately investigated for effect in ocular tissues This chapter explains the herbal extracts and secondary metabolites isolated from herbs used in the treatment of ophthalmic diseases, as well as providing a platform for researchers to design more efficient novel herbal formulations.
