Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), the famous Irish writer, is one of the literary figures of the last decade of the 19th century in England. It is impossible to talk about this influential period in the literature of this country without mentioning his name. Nevertheless, at the time of his death, he was an unknown writer who, if not for the diligent efforts of Robert Ross (1859-1918), his friend and the first editor of his works in the 20th century, Wilde would now be considered a forgotten figure. This article examines some of Ross' services in textual criticism and its effect on the public perception of Wilde's works in a major part of the 20th century.
