Circadian rhythm refers to regular fluctuations in biochemical, physiological, and behavioral rhythms in mammals and many life forms over a cycle of approximately 24 hours. The circadian clock plays a central role in the pathogenesis of diseases such as metabolic syndrome, obesity and cancer. DNA repair, DNA damage control and apoptosis in healthy and cancerous cells are rhythmic mechanisms and that these events occur under the control of clock genes. Although healthy and cancerous tissues are controlled by the same clock genes in the organism, the expression of these genes during the day varies. In this chapter, the relationship between circadian rhythm and carcinogenesis will be discussed.
